California Closets - Seattle
2.0
Our experience with California Closets in Washington state has been an unmitigated disaster. To begin with, they attempted to install a unit on our wall, which failed miserably and resulted in significant damage to the wall itself. (there are about 20 large holes, and they also broke through our kitchen closets) This left us with an eyesore and we must stay in a room with a damaged wall for the foreseeable future. We are still waiting for California Closets to determine that the unit might not be installable and we no longer want to work with them. To add insult to injury, they are now subjecting us to a review before the refund process. They claim they need to conduct "extra investigations," which only adds to the burden of this entire ordeal. This happened in our bedroom and their assumption is that we have to accommodate their process from a mistake that they made. It feels like they're trying to wear us down, making the process as inconvenient and frustrating as possible. Our experience with California Closets (in Kent, WA) in Washington has been a nightmare. If you're considering their services, I would strongly advise you to look elsewhere for a more competent and reliable option, as this has been an incredibly disappointing experience

We hired Pete initially to help with a couple of re-modeling projects at home, including (but not limited to) adding an extra room upstairs. However, we discovered water damage few months prior to the project's planned start date. Pete helped us gain clarity on the rebuild efforts that would follow soon after the water mitigation would complete, worked closely with the insurance adjusters and was always responsive during the planning phases of the process. His crew members were very professional, friendly and always worked with us closely to meet our design needs. For the complexity of the project, Pete and his team did a great job in projecting reasonable timelines and setting expectations. I have only great things to say about the quality of the workmanship of his team. Overall, we would recommend Pete for home renovation/repair efforts

The team was great and did an amazing job! Our home is older and not level at all, but they did an outstanding job with not only making the best of it, but making it nearly impossible to notice any gaps or imperfections with alignment. With this installation, the rooms look and feel finished. We would absolutely recommend Seattle Doors and Closets to anyone especially our closest family and friends. Thank you for a job very well done

I would give Carol 100 stars if I could. She is the absolute best. After injuries, depression, and life in general happened, I let my house get cluttered. Carol came in with no judgement, she made me feel validated, and said she was able to help. And she did. We made an appointment and she came in and by the end of the day, the house felt so much better. I will definitely be reaching out to her again as I continue moving forward with projects on my house. She is the absolute best

Raincap Construction + Electric
5.0
It went AMAZING! I cannot say more good things about Chris! I am so very glad we went with Raincap for this remodel. This was actually our first big remodel, and we were a bit nervous. But Chris was fantastic to work with, and the project went as smoothly as anyone could hope. The hiccups were promptly addressed by Chris, and a more than acceptable resolution achieved. And though the price was a little higher than quoted, the adders were expected, and some things we decided to add ourselves. Chris' subcontractors are really great. Each one was personable, easy to work with, and most importantly, experts at what they were doing. We only had issues with one (the insulation guys- Clean Crawls), but Chris dealt with the issues for us and we were very happy with how he handled it. Chris ordered a porta-potty for the duration of the project, which was nice. The dumpster and toilet came as scheduled and were serviced and removed as scheduled also. Demo went smoothly and quickly. 2 guys came to do the demo, and unfortunately it was the hottest day of the summer (it hit mid-upper 90's!), but they worked quickly and efficiently and got it done in record time. Very nice guys. The first construction problem came when the paneling was torn down. Apparently back in 1937 when this was done, they weren't too big on structural support. Room 2 had 1, yes just one, ceiling support beam. I won't get into all the various structural issues, but basically, there needed to be an extra full day (at least) of the framing guy's work to get the rooms up to snuff. But we figured there would be something when tear down was done, and at least it was fixable. Lance, the framer, was a master! When he reinforced the roof beams, he lifted the roof about 6" (it was sagging that much). Electrical work was done with no problems. They took my crude drawings of where I wanted what, and made it work. Somewhere in this project, the line to the lower floor dining room was messed up - so we lost light in that room. The electrical guy came out quickly and, even though they had to cut up some of the subfloor (thankfully the flooring wasn't laid yet) to get to it, it was fixed. I only had 1 qualm with the electrical and that was during the finish - we painted prior to the electrical finish, so when the can lighting went in, he left black marks, smudges and some holes in the ceiling that my paint guy had to go back and fix and repaint. But it wasn't that big of a deal, I'd just suggest they wear gloves and be more careful when installing the cans & other finish items next time. The next issue was with the insulation guys. We wanted added bird blocking to the roof, in hopes to help keep air circulating in the attic and get the temperature down in the summer. The initial meet went well, and they seemed to know what was going on. But when they came to do the various insulation work and the blocking, it was messy. The bird blocking was uneven and messy, and they didn't really know what to do with the insulation - I had to continually answer their questions as to what they should be doing (and I wasn't too sure myself, as Chris and the Clean Crawls guy discussed it). Also, they showed up late, stayed late, didn't finish when they said they would, just overall poor communication. Anyway, I spoke to Chris about this, and he was surprised, as he'd had prior good experiences with them. However, he made every effort to make it right, and he did. He personally dealt with the sub so I didn't have to, and I wasn't charged for any of this work. The drywallers did great work - also very professional and efficient. Dale, of DC Drywall, did the mudding. I refer to him as the alien, as he liked to show up as early as possible (but I only let him in after 7am). :) He is a great guy, and does amazing work. Extremely smooth walls, he evened out some odd angles. We also had him do some work in the basement where the ceiling was removed to add a water line a while ago. He fixed the holes in the stairwell (which is lathe/plaster, not drywall). He came back at the end to fix the holes created by the stair guys when they ripped out the old stairs (took some wall with it), and he made it smooth and match the existing walls. You can hardly tell anything was ever wrong. The flooring guy - Daniel of European Hardwood Floors - was also a pleasure to work with, and did amazing work. I'll detail my experience with him in a separate review. The tiling in the bathroom went well and looks amazing! Since it is such a small space, we had to order a 10" rough-in toilet. Unfortunately, there were some problems with the flange and the toilet wouldn't sit right (who knew this wasn't standard?!), but Chris and Liam tried a bunch of different things, and it finally got set. Sink was installed just fine, as were the towel rack and toilet paper holder. The finish went really well. The trim was installed perfectly. Everything was even and pretty. The whole project took a touch longer than quoted, but that was due to the additional framing and then some things extra that we wanted added, so it was as expected. The upstairs now looks AMAZING. I am just in awe every time I walk up there. I don't cringe every time I go upstairs anymore - instead I smile! We have so much more usable space (with the closet space opened up and the removal of the built in bed). It is smooth, pretty, clean lines, no droopy ceilings or claustrophobic issues. I am so very happy I went with Chris and Raincap to do this remodel. He made me feel comfortable throughout the entire process, and I didn't stress as much as I thought I would, since he took care of everything. He is extremely organized, knowledgeable, and friendly, and knows all the good subcontractors. He treats his subs well - which is also very important for quality jobs. Many have been with him for years. I'll definitely be hiring Chris for all my future jobs

Raincap Construction + Electric

Raincap did a fabulous job and were awesome to work with. Both Chris and Larry, who supervised the project were amazing to work with. I engaged Chris months earlier about the work and he was very clear regarding when they would be available and proactively contacted me if anything changed with our timeline. The actual work went smoothly, they finished early and came in on budget (maybe a little under). The quality of the work was excellent and we have been very happy with the finished project. In addition to this work, we had some unplanned work come up when we pulled an old concrete porch out to replace with a deck. After pulling the porch out we discovered some rot that needed to be addressed before we could build the deck. Even though Raincap had already finished with our other project and was very busy, Larry came over to help us out and got us all squared away so that we could begin building our deck. They rock and we plan to hire them again to finish our basement

Raincap Construction is awesome. Chris is very professional and his follow through is unmatched based on our experience with other work that we have done over the last 6 years that includes electrical, plumbing, and a kitchen remodel. We will hire Raincap Construction in the future & highly recommend this company due to their follow through and excellent sub contractors

Chris, Liam and their team of subs for sheetrock, electrical, insulation, spackling and framing performed a phenomenal job. My wife and I couldn?t be happier with our second floor guest room and master closet. Chris provided excellent recommendations before, during and even after the project was completed. We even had a closet designer comment on how impressed he was on the quality of the master closet (level floor, straight walls, etc.). Chris and his subs were very accommodating on schedule, even working weekends to wrap up the project in 2.5 weeks. If you want a general contractor with a team with exceptional attention to detail, subs that you can trust, and a great sense of humor, then look no further than RainCap Construction. I already have a list of projects that I expect Chris and his team will work on for next year

We couldn't be happier with the experience. Chris, his employees and subs were all spectacular. There was some very tricky engineering involved in the removal of the wall for the sliding door, as well as in the leveling of the floor. Lance, Liam and David are master craftsmen. The end result is stunning. They were on budget and on time. Chris had the scheduling down to the minute, so there was never any lag in work progress. We highly recommend Chris and his team, and we will go to Raincap for all of our remodeling needs in the future

I am an Owner Operator with 39 continuous years in the construction field and 19 years in business as Vic Steiner Carpentry. Over these years as an employee of other construction companies and being self employed, I have mastered all of the trades that are involved in residential remodeling and perform all of the work myself. I will present a firm bid in a contract, including sales tax and payment schedule. Attached to the contract is a very detailed Work Specifications list that specifies every detail of the work I am bidding on. I am listed with Washington State as a certified Lead Paint Renovator and certified in Wedi tile substrate installation. Pictures of work I have done and a list of references are available on my web site at vicsteinercarpentry.co
"Vic Steiner is honest, experienced, meticulous yet practical. He is a problem solver and his skills are many. He has worked on numerous projects for us, all of which have been done to high standards. He approaches each project as if it were for his own home. Here are some of the projects he has accomplished for us, or for close neighbors: kitchen remodel, bath remodel, flooring (both installation and refinishing) , basement renovation, outdoor work (decking, outdoor lighting, fencing, brickwork, paths). He generally works alone, and if a project is too ambitious for him (it rarely is) he will honestly decline it. He avoids traffic by arriving mid morning and leaving later in the day than most contractors. We give him our very strongest recommendation.

"Working with Kirk was great and he'll be my go-to for my next project. I installed a French Door into an interior existing doorframe. It had since started to hang wrong and scrape the surrounding door frame. Kirk was able to diagnose the issue quickly and gave me options for the repair. While more time consuming I went with the proper repair for longevity. Kirk also took the time to explain what I did wrong initially and pointers for DIY in the future. Thanks Kirk!

Closet Designer FAQs
Building a custom closet costs about $2,000, on average. Because many types, sizes, and designs are available, the cost to build custom closets ranges from $250 to $6,000 or more. A reach-in closet is on the lower end of the price range from about $250 to $1,500, compared to a walk-in closet at $750 to $3,500 or a wardrobe at the high end between $1,500 and $6,000 or more.
You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.
Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:
A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.
A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.
A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.
The main difference between a closet and a wardrobe is that a closet is a separate room for general storage with its own door, and a wardrobe can be either built-in or freestanding place to store clothing. A walk-in or reach-in closet connected to a bedroom often serves the same purpose as a wardrobe by primarily storing clothes and shoes. A built-in wardrobe often does not have doors and leaves clothes exposed to view, whereas a standalone wardrobe usually has doors.
Yes, building a custom closet can definitely add value to your home. Creating a more useful and pleasing space to your home, especially a custom closet for prospective home buyers to imagine as their own, is likely to increase the value. However, avoid overdoing it with a closet that takes up too much space that’s otherwise more useful as living space, or paying extra for overly lavish materials and finishes that aren’t likely to add more value than they cost.
