Red Velvet Whoopie Pies Recipe | How to Make Whoopie Pies (2)

In order to make these amazing red velvet whoopie pies you need the following ingredients and tools:

  • Red Velvet Cake Mix – The red velvet cake mix is the main base for these cookies. We are essentially making cake mix cookies. I always love repurposing cake mixes and using them for things other than cake.
  • Frosting – Use whatever kind of frosting that you like. Buttercream frosting is one of my favorite things to use, you can buy storebought frosting or make it from scratch.
  • Large eggs – The eggs will help with the structure of the cookies as well as help make them softer and add moisture.
  • Vanilla Extract– The vanilla extract will add flavor and enhance the flavor of the other ingredients.
  • Butter – The butter will add flavor.

Tools

Preheat the oven to 375 F/190 C. Melt the butter and pour it into a large bowl. Use the microwave or stovetop to melt the butter. Add the cake mix, eggs, and vanilla extract to the bowl with the melted butter. Use a wooden spoon to combine all those ingredients together. This will form the red velvet whoopie pies dough.

*Note don’t follow the ingredients list on the back of the box.

Step 3: Bake those cookies

Take a half ball-shaped tablespoon or a small ice cream or cookie scoop and scoop out balls of dough. Place them onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Space them about two inches apart. Then bake them in the oven in the middle position for 8 to 9 minutes.

Step 4: Cool and assemble

Red Velvet Whoopie Pies Recipe | How to Make Whoopie Pies (5)

Once the cookies come out of the oven allow them to cool completely. Next take a plastic bag or piping bag and add the frosting to it. You can make your own frosting or just use store bought frosting. Pipe frosting on the bottom of one cookie. Then place another cookie on top which will finish the red velvet whoopie pies.

Now all you have to do is eat those yummy red velvet whoopie pies. They make a great gift for friends, family, or that special someone. Enjoy!

How long do red velvet whoopie pies last?

These amazing treats will last 3 to 5 days in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge. They may dry out slightly but will still be yummy. You can also wrap them individually in plastic and freeze them for up to 3 months. Then just thaw them out overnight in the fridge before eating them. You may also thaw them out at room temperature.

FAQs

What is the filling made of in whoopie pies? ›

Ingredients for Whoopie Pie Marshmallow Cream Filling:

Marshmallow Creme or Marshmallow Fluff work here. Marshmallow creme has a slightly thinner consistency than fluff, so you may need to add a bit more powdered sugar to sufficiently stiffen it up. Butter – This helps create the creamy filling.

What is the difference between Maine and Pennsylvania whoopie pies? ›

Experts agree that the biggest difference between a Maine whoopie pie and a Pennsylvania gob is the use of commercial marshmallow Fluff in the Maine version, versus homemade marshmallow fluff in the Amish version.

Can you use a muffin pan for whoopie pies? ›

You can use either pan for whoopie pies and/or muffin tops. It can also be used for eggs (to fit English muffins) and cookies. I'm sure there are other things you can use it for also. Hope this helps.

Why are my whoopie pies so flat? ›

Whoopie pies can come out flat for a few reasons. The main reason is over mixing the cake batter. When you fold in the dry ingredients into the wet, make sure NOT to over mix. Just mix until the cocoa and flour just disappear.

What is the original whoopie pie? ›

As we mentioned above, whoopie pies are believed to originally been made from leftover cake batter. The Maine legend paints the picture of a house wife putting the batter on a cookie sheet and shouting “Whoopie!!” when she realized that baking it up worked.

Do homemade whoopie pies need to be refrigerated? ›

Yes. We recommend refrigerating due to the filling, but as long as it's stored in an airtight container it can rest at room temperature for a duration of a day or two. Inside each of our whoopie pies is a delicious creamy center that is prone to melting.

What do they call whoopie pies in Pittsburgh? ›

Gob [the term indigenous to the Pittsburgh region] has been trademarked by the Dutch Maid Bakery in Johnstown. The owner, Tim Yost, bought the rights to the name and the process in 1980.

Is Moon Pie the same as whoopie pie? ›

Whoopie Pie vs Moon Pie - Let's start by clearing up a common misperception: Whoopie Pies are not the same thing as a Moon Pie. A traditional moon pie has marshmallow filling sandwiched between graham cracker cookies, and then dipped in chocolate. Sounds good...but it's definitely not a Whoopie!

Are whoopie pies the same as devil dogs? ›

If you've never had a Devil Dog, just think of it as a hot dog–shaped whoopie pie—two layers of soft chocolate cake sandwiching a creamy whipped filling. Honestly, that filling can be just about anything, from your favorite vanilla frosting to Homemade Cool Whip or even a batch of Cherry Pit Whipped Cream.

Do you need a special pan to make whoopie pies? ›

A whoopie pie pan is helpful but not necessary. But, if you don't have a whoopie pie pan, you can use a regular baking sheet lined with parchment and spread the batter in circles. I actually suggest making a template and using it to trace circles on the parchment and then fill in those circles with batter.

Why do whoopie pies get sticky? ›

Why are my whoopie pies sticky? Since these whoopie pies use pumpkin puree, they're quite moist and can become sticky when left at room temperature. Keep the whoopie pies in the fridge once they've cooled to room temperature to prevent them from becoming sticky.

What is another name for a whoopie pie? ›

Also known as moon pies, big fat Oreos, black-and-whites, and gobs what most folks don't know is that there is a controversy about where this flavorful treat originated. Whoopie Pies combine two cookie-shaped chocolate cakes sandwiched between a creamy filling and vanilla-flavored frosting.

Did Amish Bakery use breast milk in whoopie pies? ›

Upon further investigation, however, it was discovered that the bakery's whoopie pies – either a cookie pie or cake – were made with human breast milk. While the white fatty liquid from an Amish princess psychologically trapped in the 1800s may be unappetizing, it is unlikely to pose a danger to consumers.

Are Oreo cakesters whoopie pies? ›

Is Peanut Butter Better? We Tried the New Oreo Cakesters. Oreo Cakesters are not nostalgic for me. The Cakester, aka Nabisco's take on a whoopie pie, was originally released in 2007, when I was an adult lady who'd aged out of lunch box snacks.

Are whoopie pies Amish? ›

Amish legends stated that to prevent wasting ingredients, women used leftover cake batter and frosting to make the sandwich treat for their children (and in some versions, their farming husbands). It was believed that when they opened their lunch pails, children (and yes, even the men) yelled out “Whoopie!”

What is pie filling made of? ›

Fruit, sugar, cornstarch, acid, extras. These are the only things you need to remember to turn out a perfect pie filling. You've already read our step-by-step guide to the flakiest, butteriest pie crust.

What is pie filling enhancer made of? ›

It can only be heated once without breaking down. It needs to be mixed with sugar to help it distribute evenly. Pie filling enhancer is is instant Clear Jel mixed with ascorbic acid and superfine sugar. It is about 50 percent sugar so you have to cut back on the amount of sugar called for in your recipe.

What is cream pie filling made of? ›

A cream pie, crème pie, or creme pie is a type of pie filled with a rich custard or pudding that is made from milk, cream, sugar, wheat flour, and eggs and typically topped with whipped cream.

What is the difference between cobbler filling and pie filling? ›

The biggest difference is that a cobbler is so easy to make (easier than pie!). While a pie is made with a bottom crust and often a top crust, the dough and the fruit filling cook together in a cobbler. Peach cobbler is best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, but it's also delicious cold.
