Making low carb simple

Instructions

  1. Chop the salsa ingredients and stir them together in a small bowl. Set aside.

  2. Add the seasoning and half the cheese to the ground beef. Combine using your hands or a wooden spoon.

  3. Make one burger per serving and pan fry or grill for 3-4 minutes on each side for a medium burger. Cook it longer if you prefer it more well done. Season with salt and pepper and add the remaining cheese on top towards the end.

  4. Serve on a lettuce leaf with mayo, bacon, pickled jalapeños, dill pickle, and mustard. And don't forget the homemade salsa!

Tip!

Here's how to make your own super-healthy mayonnaise without soybean oil and additives.

Can I please ask for an edit? I've made this twice and I've made the same mistake both times. Could the qty of cheese to put in the patties be edited to 50g and put the other 50g in with the toppings please?

I will alert the recipes team. In the meantime, pay attention to step 2 which references half the cheese.

Not great. Leave the cheese out of the mince as it merely makes the burgers stick to the skillet and fall apart, despite the butter. Add it to the salsa instead...

If you need this meal to feed two people, then divide however many burger patties you made by 2 to get a serving.

If you need enough food for two meals, choose 2 servings.

If you get hungry, you can eat. Choose low carb veggies for a snack (celery, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumbers etc), or as the site suggests, a piece of turkey breast rolled in a lettuce leaf. It helps to read about this diet on the website, LOTS of info. The broth is suggested if you get a headache due to low salt. It’s probably ok if you want to use it as a snack, but ewww. I eat string cheese sometimes too.

On the two week challenge do I just eat what is on the recipe. Three meals a day with no vegetables? And the snack would be the bouillon cubes ?

Perhaps a picky question. You state in many places that the default for recipes is raw weight for meat, unless otherwise indicated.

In this recipe, (for 4 portions) you call for "150g cooked bacon, crumbled". Am I to take that at face value, and weigh out 150 of cooked bacon, then crumble it? Or might this recipe better read "150g of bacon, cooked then crumbled?" Based on what I have learned is the size of 150g of raw bacon that has then been cooked, that would seem to be a more appropriate amount of bacon to split between 4 cheeseburgers.

Thanks again for an excellent site!

This would be pre-cooked weight. 1 slice of thick cut bacon is approximately 15 grams, so that's definitely plenty of bacon.

16 strips in a one pound package of thick cut bacon. Works out to very close to 30 grams per slice of thick cut bacon?? Most recipe pictures I've seen here showing 2 or 3 full slices of bacon end up with perhaps 2 or 3 half-slices of medium-sliced bacon. Not sure where the discrepancies come from... Fortunately the fat/protein calorie balance in fried bacon is about 55/45, so not much harm in adding more bacon.

You may find this helpful. Chopped is small squares.

That may well vary by brand. For most brands, a slice of thick cut bacon is more like 15 grams by weight. Here's an example with on common brand.

Please bear with me. If you look carefully at the picture of the product on Wegman's page that you provided, there are approximately 16 slices in that 16 ounce package. I am not trying to be difficult - I am trying to ensure I am using the correct numbers when following this diet. Many thanks for your patience, but could someone please review the basis for the 15 grams per uncooked slice calculation ? Many thanks.

Yes, though you may wish to add more fat when mixing the burgers as chicken is much lower fat.

Made this twice. Loved both times. Very filling with all the toppings. Just wanted to comment ,looking at previous posts re weights etc, I've not been so worried about exact weights etc, you just get to know what your plate should look like. I've noticed a few discrepancies too in a few recipes but I go with what looks right. I'm sure some days mine and hubby's carbs probably do go over the keto required 20g but the weight is still falling off both of us :). We are just relaxing and enjoying the experience. The rest is falling into place :) or off as the case may be.

I'm sure there have been comments about this previously, but the portion sizes seem huge to me!
175g raw beef mince (ground beef) makes for one massive burger pattie. And then with everything else on top - it seemed enough for 2.
I realise you advocate listening to the body - eating when hungry, not eating when not. But is there a specific reason the portions are so large to begin with?
    Thanks

175g/6oz is a pretty standard burger size. As you mentioned we do recommend eating to hunger, so if you feel this is too much, it's definitely OK to make smaller patties!

Use your favorite shreddable cheese--cheddar, Monterey jack, a blend, mozzarella, even gruyere would be nice.

I am pleased to find this option at Diet Doctor. I took the survey, but didn't find a way to list my avocado allergy. Is there a reasonable substitute for avocado I could make myself that would fit in the diet plan?

You can just omit the avocado from a recipe like this. For one where it may be a side item, it's helpful to know that 50g macadamia nuts is roughly equivalent to 100g avocado.
